There are several habitual writers to this column who spew vitriol in a politically partisan manner. It seems, for them, that this column is a forum for trying to take down people who disagree with them.
What is the function of this column? Are the editors required to print every letter sent to them? Is this scholarly debate or personal and hateful speech? I, for one, think it is unnecessary, especially now in very trying times. We should be finding our commonality, especially in the Jewish community.
We can find trolls and hate anywhere on the internet, directed at us, the Jewish people, from all directions. Nobody turns to The Chronicle in hopes of seeing our friends and colleagues humiliated.
I would recommend that the editors use their judgment to print letters that enlighten a subject and bring to the readership matters most helpful to us. Letters to the editor can provide readers with information on issues with which they may be unfamiliar and can inspire rather than become a sounding board for angry partisanship.
