Arvin D. Pfefer passed away on Nov. 5 at the age of 95.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Arvin attended Central High School and graduated from Kansas City Junior College. He served as a second lieutenant during the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1952.

Arvin married Elaine Cohen in 1953 and at the same time started his career with Prudential Insurance. Family and a work ethic second to none were both his priority and passion. He was guided by solid principles that allowed him to be successful until his retirement at the age of 90.

He was a true mensch in every way who never met a stranger. He enjoyed nothing more than helping people so much that his career in insurance became more like a calling. In his late 60s, he saw that people were living longer and focused his attention on the need for long term care insurance. With his regular appearances on radio and authoring a book, Arvin became an expert/advocate with his vast knowledge of the product, saving thousands of people from financial hardship.

His sense of community led him to extensive involvement at the Jewish Community Center and Congregation Ohev Sholom, where he served on various committees and ultimately served as president of the congregation. He was a mentor and friend to many, helping to launch the careers of countless individuals with his seal of approval.

He had endless energy for his family to whom he was devoted. At any one time, he could be found embarking on multiple home projects with his kids as his helpers or grilling burgers and dogs for frequent family get-togethers while Elaine made her great sides. Time spent with Arvin always left his family feeling better, happier and cared about.

Arvin was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Elaine Pfefer, and his Old English sheepdogs, Samantha and Bella.

He is survived by his son, Mark Pfefer, his wife, Cheri, and his grandson, Drake.

He is also survived by his daughter, Julie Pfefer, and her wife, JoMary.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, at Rose Hill Cemetery (6900 Troost Ave, Kansas City, MO 64131). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in Arvin’s name to a charity of one’s choosing.
