A life well lived ended on Monday, April 24, 2023.

Mel Mallin, 98, was proud to be a native of Kansas City. Funeral services were held on April 27, 2023, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave, Kansas City, MO 64131. Burial with military honors followed at Kehilath Israel Blue Ridge Cemetery. Please omit flowers; contributions are suggested to Village Shalom or Kansas City Hospice.

Mel graduated from Paseo High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served for four years and was a B17 Navigator with the Eighth Air Force.

His business career included 14 years in the garment industry and 20 years as a box manufacturer with a plant in Kansas City and Denver, Colorado. In 1984, he developed the first loft condominiums in Kansas City. He went on to develop the first loft apartments in the River Market area along with his son-in-law, Dana Gibson. He was totally dedicated to the development of the River Market area and downtown housing.

His civic career included founding the River Market Business Association, serving as president of the Jewish Vocational Service, Kehilath Israel Synagogue and Village Shalom Villa Residents Association.

Mel is survived by his children, Larry (Bridget) Mallin, Lisa Mallin, and David (Gail) Mallin; son-in-law, Dana Gibson; and grandchildren, Max Gibson, Jacob Gibson and Josh Mallin. Mel is also survived by his devoted caregiver, Robert Boyce, and his best friend, John Shuchart.

Mel made good things happen. His motto was “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
