Allen Sherman Rose was born on April 13, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois.

Affectionately known as “Al,” he spent his first 18 years of life in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago, where he attended Von Steuben High School. Not far from there, he met his bride of 69 years at Montrose Beach on Lake Michigan. Allen and Phyllis Rose were married on March 1, 1953 – six days before Allen was deployed to serve the U.S. Army in the Korean war.

They reunited and moved to Creve Coeur, Missouri – where their family of four began with two children, Karen and Donald. They later moved to Overland Park, Kansas, and welcomed baby Mark — a family of five. Surprise!

Allen was a lover of raspberry filled doughnuts and taking summertime “dips” in his backyard pool. He was a true hobbyist, finding passion in fix-it projects around the house, early adoption of electronics (even into his later years), photography, and many sports and gaming activities.

He inspired his family to value time together at home, seemingly inventing the idea of a staycation. Celebrations, backyard barbecues around the pool, and relaxed conversations at the kitchen table became the priority for Allen and his family and friends. Those around him were drawn to his gentle, quiet nature and found comfort in his calm and balanced way of living.

We know that Allen will be missed by all of his family and friends, including those recent friends in their retirement community at the Town Village of Leawood.

Allen was preceded in death by his grandson, Aaron Miller. He is survived by his children: Karen (Dennis) Miller, Donald (Debbie) Rose, Mark (Julye) Rose; his grandchildren: Danielle (Jeremy) Antes, Steven (Alex) Miller, Deanna Rose, Daniel Rose, Nathan Rose; his great-grandchildren: Eli Antes, Jonah Antes, Gabriella Antes, Caleb Antes.

The family is especially grateful for the care and kindness of the Kansas City Hospice House staff in his final days. The family suggests donations to the Kansas City Hospice House, The Heritage Center at the JCC, or the charity of your choice.

Shiva service was held Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Town Village of Leawood.

Time to rest, Al — well done!
