Work for Congregation Beth Shalom’s new sanctuary is underway.

The winner of the 2023 Margolis Memorial Scholarship Essay Contest, sponsored by KC Lodge #184, B'nai B’rith, is Rafaela Grieco-Freeman. 

Jewish Family Services (JFS) offers a support group for those who have lost a loved one to substance use and addiction — the Kansas City area’s first GRASP (Grief Recovery After Substance Passing) group.

Rita Shapiro, National Hadassah co-chair of antisemitism in the Education and Advocacy Division, will educate attendees of Beth Shalom Sisterhood PrayerWorks on Wednesday, June 28, at 11 a.m. on Zoom. The event is open to the community.

The Jewish Community Foundation’s (JCF) Jewish Leadership Education Action and Development (J-LEAD) program, a giving circle for adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, has granted $24,000 in support of five important community programs. 

The J (the Jewish Community Center) hosted the C You In The Major Leagues Foundation Youth Baseball Camp from June 19 to 22.

At the 76th Tony Awards in New York, held on Sunday, June 11, two of the top four awards went to a Jewish-themed production—“Leopoldstadt” (Best Play), and “Parade” (Best Revival of a Musical). Both were nominated for six Tonys.

Before a packed audience in the Lewis and Shirley White Theatre at the Jewish Community Center, 10 area high school singers were chosen as finalists for the KC SuperStar 2023 singing competition. These teens will go on to compete in the finals at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, in Yardley Hall at Johnson County Community College.

Recently, Jim Kanally designated a $900,000 gift from the John Joseph Kanally Trust to Jewish Family Services (JFS) through the Jewish Community Foundation.

“A Transition for Everybody,” JFS’s support group for Jewish parents or caregivers of transgender children, is for parents who want a safe space to discuss what changes their children’s transitions bring to their own lives.
