Jewish Family Services (JFS) is beginning its 2023 Hanukkah Project, providing Hanukkah gifts for more than 300 individuals (including older adults and children) in the community who are facing challenges.

The organization is calling upon the Jewish community to help support its program.

“Each year, we support Jewish clients connected with JFS through the pantry, social work and other programs by helping with the holidays,” said Rachel Ohlhausen, JFS director of program operations. “Hanukkah is a meaningful time for all, and with the community [that] donates time, money and gifts, families in tight financial circumstances don't have to go without [them]."

There are three ways that community members can help the Hanukkah Project.

“Adopting” a client

Community members can “adopt” a JFS client (family or individual) for gift-giving. Those interested must complete an interest form at https://bit.ly/hanukkahadoption. The deadline to adopt is Oct. 16.

JFS will then send the “adopters” their recipients’ wish lists, and the “adopters” can shop for their JFS client. Gifts should be dropped off by Nov. 10. Drop off locations and times will be announced soon.

Giving gift cards

Gift cards allow JFS clients to choose items for themselves, getting the correct sizes and styles, shopping for groceries  or surprising a family member.

JFS requests that gift cards be from Target, Walmart or Amazon, in $25 increments.

Financial donations

Financial donations made to JFS for the Hanukkah project will be used to purchase gift cards on the donor’s behalf.

Donations can be made online, mailed or delivered to the JFS offices at the Jewish Community Campus or at JFS’ Brookside office (425 E. 63rd St., Kansas City, MO 64110). Checks should have “Hanukkah Project” indicated in the memo line. JFS requests donations for gift cards be in $25 increments. Donation deadline is Nov. 10.
