Richard Borlaza, an Overland Park resident involved with the Jewish community, has announced his candidacy for Overland Park City Council, Ward 3.

Borlaza's experience and involvement in the community, including his 13-year tenure as director of informational technology at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (HBHA), have enriched his understanding of Judaism. His engagement in the Jewish community and participation in MeltonKC classes (a regional division of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning) have strengthened his connection and broadened his knowledge about Judaism and its emphasis on social justice.

"Working within the Jewish community and taking Melton classes have helped me gain a profound appreciation for the principles of social justice and tikkun olam,” Borlaza said. “...I believe in the importance of not just talking about it but actively engaging in making our community better.”

Borlaza actively volunteers for Tikkun KC, a local organization dedicated to providing affordable housing throughout the Kansas City urban core. He also advocates for sustainable practices and mixed-use development to create walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, and he has been working with neighboring cities to enhance transportation options throughout the Greater Kansas City area.

Borlaza's interpretation and actions of tikkun olam extend beyond the Jewish community. He has actively supported KC Tenants, an organization advocating for tenant rights and affordable housing. Additionally, he has lent his support to unions, joining assembly workers from the United Auto Workers in their picket lines and providing food and water.
