While many school faculty and student organizations closed for the summer, the Chabad House at KU continued with special summer programs, hosting students for Shabbat meals, social events, weekly classes and offering mental health support.

“We know how important it is for us to be present for our students during the summer,” said Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel, director of Chabad at KU. “Our students are our family, and we never abandon our family. While the crowds may be smaller, the close knit feeling makes it even more special”.

“I love going to Shabbat at Chabad during the summer,” said Mandy Sokol, a student from Overland Park, Kansas. “Having these experiences all summer reminds me that practicing Jewish traditions is important regardless of KU being in session or whatever else may be going on in my life.”

In addition to catering to student needs, KU Chabad staff also spent the summer welcoming incoming freshmen as they join New Student Orientation. As these students visit their new home for the next four years, KU Chabad staff greeted and welcomed the students and their families.

“With so much going on during this major transition in their lives, it is crucial that a warm friendly face is present to greet them and make them feel right at home,” Rabbi Tiechtel said.
