Major Cantor David Frommer was the guest speaker during The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah's Erev Shabbat service on May 27.

In honor of Memorial Day, his topic wasCan Reform Judaism save Memorial Day?” He shared his thoughts on how Jews — and members of Kansas City's Jewish community — can bring back the “true meaning” of the holiday. He also honored those who had served in the military through spoken word and song during the service.

Maj. Cantor Frommer began his military career serving with distinction in the West Bank as a lone soldier in the Israel Defense Forces. He then served in the New York Army National Guard, where he received his ordination as chaplain. After his ordination, he deployed overseas as the first cantor to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. military, providing theater-wide religious support for Jewish personnel stationed in Afghanistan, Kuwait, Jordan and Qatar.

Maj. Cantor Frommer served as cantor of Shomrei Torah Synagogue in Santa Rosa, California, and Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco. He currently serves as the Jewish Chaplain at the U.S. Military Academy West Point.
