Jewish Family Services client Freddie Mae Slaughter receives her tablet from the Tech Connect Program Coordinator Michael Ross.

This year will be remembered as one of the most difficult years ever. Between a worldwide coronavirus pandemic temporarily shutting down our community causing increased unemployment and economic uncertainty and racial injustice caused by violence and protest, more people in our community are hurting. There is one thing that is certain — Jewish Family Services has continued helping thousands making their lives a bit better through its many programs and services. JFS assists others regardless of faith, age, culture or lifestyle.

Freddie Mae Slaughter knows firsthand the impact of JFS services. An older adult living independently in her own home, Slaughter was referred to JFS by a local church. With a bright smile and a welcoming personality, Slaughter always cares for others. She worked as a nurse’s aide and helped shape the community within which she lives. However, as Slaughter aged, she needed a hand in navigating the complex complicated bureaucracies of health insurance and Medicaid. Living on a fixed income, JFS also helped Slaughter manage utility payments and other bills.

“It’s an honor to be there for her,” said Liz Conaway, JFS Older Adult Care manager who has been working with Slaughter.

When Slaughter’s property values were reassessed and increased sky-high, Conaway and a local realtor helped her gather documentation to prepare for her hearing to appeal the new assessment — and Slaughter won! When pain medication Slaughter relied upon was no longer available at her local pharmacy, Conaway made dozens of calls to different pharmacies and organizations to find the medication at a price Slaughter could afford.

“Liz came to my rescue,” Slaughter said. “I was not feeling well and wasn’t eating. Liz also helped get me new dentures so now I can eat. Liz never gave up.”

Helping older adults like Slaughter live independently for as long as they can is critical to their longevity. Human connection and maintaining a spiritual life are also important parts of good health and longevity. Slaughter is among the first to participate in JFS’ new Tech Connect program ultimately putting tablets in the hands of more than 100 older adults along with wireless access, to help them stay connected especially during the pandemic.

“I use my tablet to participate in services at my church,” Slaughter said. “Attending church is really important to me! JFS has saved me from a lot of hardship, and I’m so grateful.”

JFS is able to make a difference in lives of Slaughter and others struggling to meet life’s challenges due to the generosity of the community. JFS’ services have helped more people than ever this year, especially with its expanded programs for older adults.
