Rabbi Jonathan Rudnick

Open to all who care for the sick

Kavod v’Nichum and Neshama: The Association of Jewish Chaplains, in conjunction with other sponsoring organizations, including Jewish Family Services of Greater Kansas City, are presenting an innovative program — “Renewing Bikur Cholim in the Time of COVID-19 North American Conference.”

Beginning biweekly Monday nights from Jan. 4 through May 10, prominent teachers and rabbis from across the country will address many of the emerging challenges of Bikur Cholim facing the pandemic. The conference seeks to provide an educational forum and a venue for exchange of ideas and concerns, assisting providers and volunteers in providing this essential service.

Topics will include expanding your spiritual toolbox, being a caring presence with technology, providing for the dying, shiva under the pandemic, new approaches to prayer, dealing with dementia, new forms of loss, and grappling with isolation and loneliness. Participants may choose to register for one session, three sessions or the entire conference; scholarships are available.

“Bikur Cholim, visiting the sick (those in need more broadly) is about BEING there with people,” said Rabbi Jonathan Rudnick, Kansas City Jewish Community Chaplain, based at JFS. “It is one of the most important reminders that each individual is not alone. Every person is part of our community, and when we visit, we are living reminders of this connection.

“I encourage individuals who are spiritual caregivers or who are interested in becoming one to check out this innovative new national conference spanning several months during this most challenging period of time.”

Kansas City’s Jewish Community Chaplaincy Program provides spiritual care and connection during difficult times, including but not limited to illness, aging issues and loss of life. The chaplaincy program works closely with area rabbis and congregations making sure they are aware of congregants who may be hospitalized or in older adult care facilities and need a visit.
