Gold, Ruth A.

Ruth A. Gold, 66, of Prairie Village, passed away Friday, July 4, 2014. Ruth was diagnosed with ALS late in 2013.

The family requests donations to the ALS Association, Keith Worthington Chapter serving Kansas and Missouri.

Ruth was born on May 8, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., to Dr. Lester and Norma Saferstein. She attended J.C. Nichols and Southwest High School, graduating in 1966. She studied history at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1970. She married Andrew Gold in June 1971 and they settled in Brooklyn, N.Y., where Ruth worked in an insurance office and Andy studied prosthetics and orthotics.

They relocated to Kansas City and later to Prairie Village to build a family, a life and a business. Ruth and Andy welcomed three sons, and Ruth became active in their preschools, elementary and high schools, developing lifelong friendships and creating networks of friends from every activity she engaged in. Ruth and Andy made their home the center of gatherings for Sunday dinners to special celebrations throughout the year.

Ruth co-founded and owned Orthopedic Service Center and Comfort Plus Shoes in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, was active in fitness activities and gave generously to many local and international nature and arts organizations.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Norma and Lester and is survived by her husband Andy; her three sons, Joshua of Oakland, Calif., and Matthew and Eric of Leawood; her sister Ann Suter (Ron) of Seattle; brother, Mike Saferstein (Debbie) of Overland Park; mother-in-law, Ruth Dzitzer of Tamarack, Fla.; and sister-in-law, Ricki Gold Auld (Tim) of Croton, N.Y.
