For a decade, Melanie Allmayer has served as a spiritual care volunteer through the chaplaincy program at Jewish Family Services. Whether visiting a patient in the hospital or making a call to an older adult living in a long-term care facility, Allmayer continues providing caring conversation, a listening ear and a hand to hold.

KOSHER ICE CREAM IN KC

Vaad HaKashruth of Kansas City recently sent out an email saying it recommends certain flavors of ice cream as kosher at Golden Scoop, the new ice cream shop in Overland Park that employs people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In observance of Tisha B’Av (the fast day that is on the ninth of the Hebrew month of Av), a period of fasting, lamentation and prayer to remember the destruction of the first and second Temples of Jerusalem and other major disasters and tragedies that Jewish people experienced throughout history, the local Jewish community will come together to remember this dark period in our people’s history. 

Village Shalom is once again open to resident families and visitors. In-person weekly Shabbat services are hosted every Friday evening at 4:00 pm in the Appleman Synagogue. Village Shalom relies on volunteers 16 years of age and up to lead services for our residents and their guests and is looking to expand its pool of volunteers.
