Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (HBHA) has named Mindy Corporon, co-founder of the nonprofit organization SevenDays, the honoree of its 50th Civic Service Celebration.

The annual fundraising event for the Jewish day school is set for Sunday evening, March 10, 2024, at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown.

Corporon’s career as the CEO of a wealth management firm took a turn when tragedy struck in Overland Park, Kansas, on April 13, 2014. Her oldest son, Reat Underwood, and father, Dr. William Corporon, were murdered by a white supremacist on the Jewish Community Campus. As part of her healing process, Corporon pivoted away from wealth management and channeled her pain into founding the SevenDays organization, a nonprofit that overcomes hate by promoting kindness and understanding through education and dialogue.

This spring will mark the 10th anniversary of the tragic murders that were covered worldwide.

With the efforts of its Kindness Youth Leadership Team, board of directors, volunteer ambassadors and individual and corporate sponsors, SevenDays hosts events each April encouraging the community to commit to and practice kindness and understanding.

Corporon is the co-founder of Workplace Healing, a business-to-business software company that works to increase employee retention, productivity and morale with its Human Recovery Platform, which provides tactical protocols for working with grieving employees.

"Mindy Corporon's journey transforming tragedy into something positive is a testament to the power of strength and the human spirit,” said Adam Tilove, head of school at HBHA. “Her dedication to promoting kindness and improving our world resonates deeply with the values we hold dear at HBHA.”

Corporon’s commitment to helping others heal extends beyond her immediate community. Despite relocating her family to Florida, Corporon continues to champion the kindness cause in Kansas City and beyond. Her support for HBHA stems from a belief that “we are not born to hate. It is something that is taught, so we must teach kindness to counteract it.”

The alignment of HBHA’s focus on mitzvot and kindness, combined with Corporon's personal mission, provides for a symbiotic relationship.

"I am humbled and honored to be receiving this award," Corporon said. “It is so important to support organizations and actions that make the world better. SevenDays strives for this by providing opportunities to increase kindness by overcoming hate with education and dialogue, as does HBHA."

As an integral part of SevenDays, the Kindness Youth Leadership Team is a group of high school students committed to championing kindness within their own peer groups and across different schools. As part of its initiatives, the 2023-2024 Kindness Youth Leadership Team will promote kindness through speaking presentations at their local middle and high schools. This approach underlines Corporon’s dedication to cultivating a culture of empathy and positive change, starting from the earliest ages.

Corporon’s dream for SevenDays is to see its principles embedded in every school. She believes that it is adults’ responsibility to teach kindness to counter the propagation of hatred.

Corporon's journey to promote kindness and its positive impact will be featured at HBHA’s dinner event. Information on sponsorships, tickets and registration is continually updated at hbha.edu/support-us/celebration-event.cfm
