The J is expanding its youth sports programming this fall with the launch of its inaugural Girls Flag Football League and the introduction of J Premier Soccer, a year-round competitive soccer development program.

The Girls Flag Football League is open to girls in 1st-through-6th grade and welcomes athletes of every skill level, including those who have never played football before. Practices begin on Aug. 16, registration closes on Aug. 3 and games will be played on Sundays throughout the fall season. Participants are divided into grade-based divisions to create balanced competition and age-appropriate instruction, while volunteer parent coaches help foster a positive team culture and mentor young athletes.

“We launched the Girls Flag Football League because we’ve seen tremendous growth and interest in the sport, both nationally and within our own community,” said Mitch Martin, a manager of sports and recreation at The J. “More girls are looking for opportunities to play football at a level designed specifically for them. Whether they’re stepping onto the field for the first time or already have experience, our goal is to create a welcoming environment for these young athletes.”

In addition to flag football, The J is launching J Premier Soccer with inaugural U10 and U12 boys teams competing in the Heartland Premier Soccer League. The year-round program includes two practices each week located at The J, weekend league matches and participation in both a fall and spring tournament. Built around the philosophy of “Confidence before pressure. Development before outcomes. Team before self,” the program is designed to help young athletes grow both on and off the field.

The program focuses on long-term player development through high-level coaching and local competition, allowing families to balance school, family and other commitments. The program was intentionally launched with two boys teams to establish a strong foundation and deliver a high-quality experience, with plans to expand and offer girls Premier teams as early as next year. Although tryouts have concluded and the U10 roster is full, limited evaluation opportunities may still be available for select U12 boys. More information and registration is available at jsportskc.org.

“At The J, we believe youth sports are about much more than learning how to pass, shoot or win games,” said Aaron Childers, a manager of sports and recreation at The J. “If our players leave J Premier Soccer with stronger character, greater confidence, lasting friendships and a lifelong love of the game, we will consider that a success.”
