Kehilath Israel Synagogue (KI), in partnership with the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education (MCHE) and The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah, have announced Congregation Beth Torah as an additional partner for the Tisha B’Av screening of the documentary “Among Neighbors.”
Beth Torah’s Rabbi Craig Lewis will moderate a discussion panel following the screening on Thursday, July 23, from 6 to 8:15 p.m.
The moderated panel discussion will feature panelists Rabbi Rachel Rothstein of B’nai Jehudah, Rabbi Moshe Grussgott of KI and Shelly Cline, historian and director of education at MCHE.
When asked about the film, Rabbi Lewis said, “‘Among Neighbors’ tells a riveting story that can remind us, even in the darkest times, the smallest crack of light can bring hope, and equally, we learn that survival is a never-ending act of defiance, an attempt to maintain light against persistent darkness.
“This is the perfect story for Tisha B’Av, for after the destruction of Jerusalem, we gained Yavneh, a sliver of what once was that grew into something beautiful,” he continued. “When we sit with candles in dark rooms reading Lamentations, we remember that Yavneh and Jewish life that sprang from it is always under threat and must be vigilantly maintained.”
After the program, attendees are invited to stay for Mincha, starting at 8:15 p.m., followed by light refreshments.
This event is open to the entire Jewish community and is free of charge. Registration is required for security and available online at kisyn.eventsmart.com/tisha-bav.
