The two locations of Jewish Family Services (JFS) Food Pantry are providing more than 550 local families with food, personal care items and household goods, but need community help to keep the shelves stocked and filled with choices.
During the High Holiday season, beginning Sept. 22 (Erev Rosh Hashanah) through Oct. 14, JFS asks the public to fill a grocery bag and help feed a family. The traditional holiday food drive, done in partnership with the Rabbinical Association of Greater Kansas City, is the largest collection for JFS and provides the greatest variety of items for the families visiting each month.
The most needed items in the pantry are canned tomato products, soup, canned fruit, body lotion and bar soap. All donated items are appreciated.
There are three ways to participate in the food drive. One is to fill a grocery bag with items for several healthy meals and drop off in the JFS barrel at your local Jewish congregation, at The J or JFS Brookside during business hours. Those who are members of congregations should check with their place of worship for drop-off deadlines.
Another way to participate is to shop online with your favorite food vendor and ship them to JFS (5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park, KS).
The third way is to make a financial donation and let JFS do the shopping. Donations can be made online at jfskc.org/donate or mailed to JFS, 5801 W. 115th St., Suite 103, Overland Park, KS 66211.
In addition to the High Holiday Food Drive, JFS is providing Rosh Hashanah meals for about 200 client households. JFS is accepting financial donations to underwrite the cost of meals. To donate for these meals, those interested can visit jfskc.org/donate-holiday or call (913) 327-8250.
