A beauty pageant with a can theme? That’s what students at Shawnee Mission East High School recently hosted, and the Jewish Family Services food pantry ended up being the big winner.

SME students in the SHARE program organized the Mr. CANsas pageant, incorporating a food drive that collected 751 pounds for the food pantry’s two locations. The Mr. CANsas pageant is a senior service day effort at the high school.

Among the student organizers were Sullivan Goettsch, Ellie Peters, Rose Kanaley, Clay Fought, Jack Hays, Emmett Liljegren, Meredith McGannon and Libby Hise. Sam Fountain was crowned as Mr. CANsas.

SHARE is one of the largest not-for-profit, student-led, school-based youth volunteer organizations in the country. Special thanks to JFS volunteer Sheryl Kaplan for making the connection with the SME students.
