Barry Alan Kaplan
Barry Alan Kaplan passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020, at home in Jerusalem, Israel. His passing was peaceful with no suffering.
Barry was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1938 to his parents Gertrude Zarisky Kaplan and Himie Kaplan (z”l). He graduated from Paseo High School in 1956 where he was active in ROTC, drama and the choir.
He was very active in Young Judaea, was a region president, attended National Young Judaea camp and was a participant in the second Young Judaea year course to Israel. He also was active in Boy Scouts, was an Eagle Scout and attended Scout camp.
He received an associate degree at Kansas City Junior College and then attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, for three years toward a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army where he served two years in the Signal Corps in Germany.
Throughout the years, he worked for various sales companies as sales associate and manager, vice president and national sales manager and held various area sales manager positions; he was experienced in international and national wholesale and retail sales.
Prior to moving to Israel, he was a sales associate and area sales manager at Macy’s (formerly the Jones Store) at Metcalf South.
He was among the founders of the Jewish Community Campus Veterans tribute and active at Kehilath Israel Synagogue where he had grown up since before his Bar Mitzvah.
In 2008, Barry and his wife, Sybil, moved to Israel where he developed his photography skills and took pictures for Sybil’s stories. He also held Israel Government Press credentials. In addition, he was a sales representative in selling cross-cultural tours to Israel. He was also active in Kehilat Moreshet Avraham Conservative Synagogue.
Barry is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sybil, of Jerusalem; sons, Marc and Craig of Atlanta; daughter, Julie of Atlanta; grandsons, Jordan of Atlanta and Ben of Macon, Missouri; stepdaughters, Elissa Zimmerman of Tel Aviv and Sharael Zimmerman Jawl of Victoria Island, British Columbia; stepgrandsons, Davis Wilder Jawl and Miller Weston Jawl of Victoria Island; and cousins.
The funeral and burial were held April 24 at Givat Shaul Cemetery in Jerusalem.
