MORTON SINGER
Morton Singer, 93, of Overland Park, died Thursday, April 30, 2020. He was born April 4, 1927, to the late Al and Faye Singer, in Slawatycze, Poland. He and his family immigrated to Kansas City in 1939. Mort attended Central High School and later obtained his GED. Other than during the years that he served in the Army, he lived in Prairie Village and Overland Park for the rest of his life.
Mort was involved in the operation of retail stores during most of his adult life. At different times, he owned and successfully operated a grocery store, delicatessen and jewelry store. Until very recently, he worked part-time at a jewelry department in a store operated by a friend. He instilled his amazing work ethic in his children.
Mort was an extremely active member of Congregation Beth Israel Abraham and Voliner. During his time at BIAV he made many cherished friends, served in a variety of capacities and regularly attended the daily minyans. In 2017, he and his wife, Helene, were the honorees at the synagogue’s Purim Gala.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Ed, Bob and Mike. He is survived by his devoted wife, Helene, and his five children: Sheldon (Cindy) Singer, Lanie (Jon) Browar, David (Sabrina) Singer, Harry Singer and Vicki (Gary) Katz, all of the metropolitan Kansas City area; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother Neal (Elaine) Singer; and many nieces and nephews. The family is very grateful for the loving care provided by his care team, Mina, Caroline, Ian, Linet and Winnie, and his physician, Dr. Jonathan Jacobs.
Funeral services were held graveside on May 1 at Kehilath Israel Blue Ridge Cemetery. The family suggests that contributions be made to Congregation Beth Israel Abraham and Voliner or TLC’s Kosher Meals on Wheels.
