Justin was born on May 8, 1980, and died way too young on Jan. 30, 2020. He was at a club in Westport with dear friends when he collapsed and died a short time later. All of us who loved him are left with broken hearts but incredibly beautiful memories.
He was a talented musician and music producer, but most importantly the creator of The Beat Academy, which led him to teach at The Plaza Academy. For the past three years he taught, mentored and lifted his students. Through Justin they learned to believe in themselves and to reach for the stars.
Along with his family and countless close friends, Justin’s loss is being felt by his 33 Beat Academy students and his fellow teachers.
Justin is survived by his adoring mother Karen Agron Flattery and his stepfather Kevin Flattery.
A memorial service and celebration of Justin’s life was held on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Congregation Beth Torah.
Donations may be made in Justin’s honor to the Justin Gillespie Beat Academy Fund and sent to The Plaza Academy, 3930 Broadway Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64111.
Our deepest thanks to all of the people who loved Justin.
