Sky, Zena C.

Zena Sky, born on Aug. 26, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, passed away on Jan. 8, 2018, peacefully at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Zena was the wife of Cantor Hyman I. Sky, cantor of Congregation Beth Shalom from 1972-1988. Prior to moving to Kansas City, Zena, Cantor Sky, Adam and Shira lived in Philadelphia, where Cantor Sky was the cantor at Congregation Beth Emeth in northeast Philly.

Zena graduated from Hunter College (New York) in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and from New York University in 1954 with an Master of Arts in education. Zena was an elementary school teacher in New York City and Union, New Jersey, for 10 years.  

She is survived by her daughter, Shira Sky Golden and Rabbi Steve Golden, of Cedarhurst, New York; son, Dr. Adam J. Sky and Caroline Sky, of St. Louis, Missouri; and brother, Solomon Gold and Beverly Gold, of Long Beach, New York; grandchildren Navah and Adam Kerman, Hannah Golden, Emily Sky, Katie Sky and Jonathan Sky.

Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, New Jersey. Donations can be sent in Zena’s memory to The Kansas City Hospice House (12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145) or Friends of The Arava Institute (13320 Centre St., Suite 206, Newton Centre, MA 02459).

Shiva was observed at Shira and Rabbi Steve’s home in Cedarhurst.
