Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (HBHA), a Jewish day school in Overland Park, Kansas, and my home since kindergarten, has always emphasized the pursuit of justice. In the past few years, the effort to more closely connect HBHA high schoolers to the local and global community through social justice work enabled my classmates and me to partner with Kansas City, Missouri-based University Academy (UA) students.
The language is painful to hear, particularly coming from fellow Jews.
The hunt for red horseradish
This true story was inspired by the movie, “The Hunt For The Red October,” although it’s not about a submarine.
In Syria, hundreds of thousands of people have died, and the death toll rises each day, as millions are forced to flee the country. In Uganda, 1,500 die each day in displaced persons camps; at least half a million to date.

For those in the ‘know,’ I am normally at morning minyan at Kehilath Israel Synagogue on Tuesday, Wednesday and on Friday. The other days I am typically at Chabad’s morning minyan.

AZA and BBG have long been an important part of our Kansas City youth programs. Under the directions of our Regional Director Morrie Kross, and secretary Helen Slotnick, both of blessed memory, our membership of youth soared and aspired to reach individual accomplishments that challenged members of other regions.
