Helen Gilman, 95, of Overland Park, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 31, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family suggests contributions be made to Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, 5801 W. 115th Street, Overland Park, KS 66211.

Mrs. Gilman was born and grew up in St. Joseph, Mo. She married her husband of 66 years, David, in 1941, then moved to Winnipeg, Canada. They returned to Kansas City in 1967, where she began a long career, 20-plus years, with Chasnoff’s at Metcalf South, selling women’s clothing. A woman of style and grace, she always wore fashions of the day that were chic and elegant.

Mrs. Gilman was an avid reader, and greatly enjoyed the newspaper puzzles. She was a good cook who enjoyed having family and friends over for Shabbat dinners and holidays. She was a former member of The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah and was a lifelong member of Hadassah.

Mrs. Gilman was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Mary Garelich; her husband, David Gilman, and her siblings, Alice Weinstein, Jake Garelich, Fanny Michelson, Hymie Garelich, Ida Dubansky, Louie Garelich, Sadie Singer and Simon Garelich.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Sheldon Gilman and Mandy Levine, Santa Monica, Calif., Dr. Richard Gilman and Dr. Lynn Murray, Overland Park; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Nick Vahlkamp, Highland Park, Ill; sister, Ann Deutch, Overland Park; grandchildren, Nicole and Alexi Vahlkamp, Laura Gilman and her husband, Daniel Sucher, and Jay Gilman. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
