Joan E. “Joanie” Remer Martin passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019, in Omaha, Nebraska. Joanie was born Oct. 28, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Sadye and Lou Remer.
She is survived by her children, Cheril Comisar (Frank), Brenda Frost (Dan) and Steve Zalkin (Kathy); brother, Miles Remer; grandchildren, Marshall Comisar (Shannon), Andrea Gomez (John), Eric Rosenberg (Molly) and Marci Rosenberg; seven great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joanie graduated from Southwest High School where she was a member of Future Teachers of America and treasurer of her literary society. Joanie was a known leader and was elected the first president of the Missouri-Kansas Region of B’nai B’rith Girls when it was formed in 1954.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marshall Zalkin, Bruce Horwich and Richard Martin; her parents; her aunt Helen (Jack) Mallin; uncles Lew (Eloise) Sutin, Oscar (Ruth) Sutin; and her grandparents, Anna and Ben Sutin.
Graveside Services were held on Friday, June 14, at Beth El Cemetery in Omaha. The family suggests memorials to the Marshall Zalkin Scholarship Fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation; Beth El Synagogue, 14506 California St., Omaha, NE 68154; or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
