Marvin Stuart David, 88, of Newport News, Virginia, and formerly of the Kansas City area, died on Nov. 21.

Marvin was born to William Rice David and Goldie Rubin David. A former resident of both Overland Park and Fairway, Kansa, Marvin spent his formative professional years learning the ins and outs of the garment industry while living in the local area. It was during this time that he founded Nomad Manufacturing. In 1978, he relocated the company to his hometown of Newport News to launch full-scale factory operations.

Under his leadership, Nomad Manufacturing grew to employ more than 250 people. The company produced baseball caps, embroidery and printed apparel for major entities including the U.S. military, NASCAR, Coca-Cola and dozens of other top-tier brands. Marvin was known for his “nothing to it but to do it” attitude, taking risks and creating opportunities from the ground up throughout his career.

In his later years, Marvin authored multiple books chronicling a lifetime of travel, business lessons and personal successes. He lived life on his own terms and traveled the world extensively. He was a competitive spirit who loved betting on sports, playing golf and playing gin rummy — a pastime he enjoyed with friends in both Kansas City and Virginia.

He is survived by his children, Rod David (Wendy), Donna David, Jill David and Matt David (Renee); his siblings, E. D. “Buddy” David (Libby) and Sue David Kline (Jerry); five grandchildren, Jeremy, Samantha, Cody, William and Emma; and two great-grandchildren, Dash and Kai.

Services were held on Nov. 24 in Newport News. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to any charitable organization that provides comfort to those in need.
