Say goodbye to invasive screening colonoscopies that require anesthesia, a day off work, someone to drive you home, and a long tube used in a procedure suite. A Jewish physician, Dr. Mark Molos of WestGlen Gastrointestinal Consultants, is the first doctor in the U.S. outside of clinical trials to use the revolutionary pillcam, a vitamin-sized pill containing a tiny camera that records the same view offered by a colonoscopy.

Rabbi Shaya Katz has had a busy summer. In May he earned his Master of Social Work degree from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work and in July he was ordained by the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, both associated with Yeshiva University in New York City. By the first week of August, he was living in Overland Park and visiting the newly re-opened kosher section at Leawood’s Hen House Market.

The KC Kollel has hired a new full-time rabbi, Rabbi Shaya Katz, and has begun offering a series of educational programs in the community once again. Last year, a transition year for the Kollel, Rabbi Ari Adler offered some programming on a part-time basis in addition to his full-time teaching position at the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy. Rabbi Adler left the area last month.

After losing their son Jason to suicide last year, Karen and Steve Arkin took action to help prevent teen suicide and draw awareness to mental illness.

Last year Jorie Simon, 22, planned to get a taste of Israel through Birthright/Taglit, spending her time with other students who attended Illinois colleges through the Shorashim program. She ended up staying on for four additional weeks and “had the summer of her life,” according to her mother, Debby Simon.
