The J is hosting a Maccabiah Games opening ceremony watch party on Wednesday, July 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the social hall at the Jewish Community Campus.
Community members of all ages are invited to attend. The opening ceremony broadcast will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Not to be confused with the JCC Maccabi Games, the Maccabiah Games is often referred to as the “Jewish Olympics” and is the world’s largest Jewish sporting event, bringing together thousands of Jewish athletes from around the globe every four years in Israel.
The watch party will give attendees an opportunity to experience the excitement of the Maccabiah Games while learning more about its connection to the JCC Maccabi Games, which Kansas City is preparing to host this summer. Throughout the evening, guests can enjoy sports-themed activity stations, bingo during the opening ceremony broadcast, a pre-ceremony sports quiz, prizes and a festive community atmosphere.
“The Maccabiah is meaningful because it creates a unique opportunity for athletes to build friendships, strengthen their Jewish identity and experience Israel together,” said Dina, the JCC Maccabi Israeli emissary. “It serves as a reminder that even though Jews live all over the world, we share a common history and connection that brings us together.”
Registration is required for the watch party and is free to attend. Dinner is available and includes a hot dog or veggie dog, chips, salad and a drink. For more information and registration is available at visit thejkc.org/Maccabiah.
Community members are encouraged to bring friends and family and join in an evening of Jewish pride, connection and celebration. The event also serves as an opportunity to highlight the values shared by both the Maccabiah Games and The JCC Maccabi Games.
“As our community prepares to host the JCC Maccabi Games, we are embracing the same spirit that makes the Maccabiah so special because it brings people together through a shared sense of Jewish identity and community,” Dina said.
Community members are also encouraged to register for and attend the JCC Maccabi Games opening ceremony on Monday, Aug. 3. Interested individuals must register in advance through RegPack as a spectator if they are not already registered as a host family or volunteer. More information can be found at jccmaccabikc.org.
