The Epsten Gallery at Village Shalom is presenting “The Collection of Babs Lowenstein,” an exhibition celebrating the life and artistic vision of local artist and educator Babs Lowenstein (z”l).

The exhibit will be on display from March 5 through April 1, with the intent of letting the community “experience the color, light and joyful creativity that defined Lowenstein’s work and her spirit.”

Following Lowenstein’s passing in September, many friends, former students and community members made tribute gifts to Village Shalom in her honor. This exhibition offers a way to remember and connect with Lowenstein through her art.

Lowenstein’s work is deeply rooted in her lifelong fascination with color and light. Her abstract oil paintings and ceramics are reflections of the vivid impressions she gathered throughout her travels and experiences.

Though Lowenstein began painting later in life, creativity had always been part of who she was. A lifelong educator affectionately known as “Miss Babs,” she spent more than 30 years as a preschool teacher at The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah, where her warmth and imagination touched the lives of thousands of children. In retirement, she pursued painting and ceramics at The J’s Heritage Center, developing the vibrant style seen throughout this exhibition.

This exhibition also celebrates Lowenstein’s enduring legacy. The gallery program is supported by the Babs and Bill Lowenstein Art Fund, which works to ensure that residents at Village Shalom are surrounded by beautiful and inspiring works of art in their community.

Admission is free, and donations are encouraged. The Epsten Gallery (5500 W. 123rd St., Overland Park, KS 66209) is open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.
