The Lewis & Shirley White Theatre at The J will present “Rent,” the Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical, from Jan. 31 through Feb. 22.
Part of The J’s 21st season, “Rent” is co-produced with KC Melting Pot Theatre.
Tickets are available now at thewhitetheatre.org. Performance dates and times include Saturdays, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, 14 and 21 at 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22 at 2 p.m.; and Thursdays, Feb. 5, 12 and 19 at 7:30 p.m.
Set in New York City’s East Village, “Rent” follows one year in the life of a group of young artists as they navigate personal challenges and build a chosen family. The story is shaped by the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s in the United States and emphasizes compassion, community and hope. Told almost entirely through music, the show relies on its score to carry the story.
The production is directed by Zane Champie, whose approach emphasizes realism and collaboration. Champie focuses on clear storytelling and ensemble performance to bring the characters and their relationships to life.
“‘Rent’ invites us to witness both the joy and the struggle of a group of friends who choose to show up for one another,” Champie said. “By sharing their everyday battles and triumphs, the show encourages empathy and reminds us of the importance of connection, especially in difficult times.”
The production is the result of a collaboration between The White Theatre and KC Melting Pot Theatre, with shared involvement in planning, production support and a strong group of cast members. This is the first collaboration between the two companies.
Ahead of the performances, The White Theatre’s scenic team will be creating a unique “AIDS Memorial Drop,” inspired by the AIDS Memorial Quilt Project, to be showcased during the show. Members of the Kansas City Jewish community will join to help paint the fabric drop, which will honor those who have fought or are fighting against HIV/AIDS.
“Not only is this cast incredibly talented, [but also] ‘Rent’ truly has everything,” said Bryson Kendall, who plays Mark. “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll cheer, but above all else, you’ll walk away with a sense of hope for tomorrow.”
“Rent” is recommended for ages 12 and up due to mature themes, including references to illness, relationships and depictions of sexual acts.
The White Theatre at The J will continue its 2025–26 season with the comedy “The Play That Goes Wrong,” opening March 14, 2026. Additional information is available at thewhitetheatre.org.
