Having mostly “retired” from official government capacities, I am afforded the luxury of freedom to “speak my mind”, (more or less) albeit not withstanding consequences, (i.e., accusations/scrutiny for “heretical thinking”- as was with Aristotle and Galileo).  I wish to raise concerns about potential consequences of future technology:

Our cultural evolution as a species depends upon God (in my belief) and upon the choices we make. As we play with fire, most certainly we have the potential to be burned- or much worse.  History is full of examples whereby study & development of potentially life-altering, positive/peaceful technologies also carry the potential for adverse consequences from abuse and from neglect spawning essentially from wanton greed.  We have “evolved” to rationalize our rationalizations.  I have witnessed many creative ideas and advanced technology become weaponized, often utilized for less-than-peaceful/altruistic means.

Consider the most amazing advancements in computer hardware and software that increasingly effect our world.  In particular those advancements that cause to both blur and narrow the gap of distinction between reality and virtual reality, between our limited brain usage and our mostly untapped neural capacities.  As our species now witnesses the dawning of AI and super-computers, we stand to advance exponentially.  This evolution also carries vulnerability for misuse.  A self-described “experienced optimist”, I must caution to guard against the potential for exploitation, enslavement and even the unimaginable- extinction!  If we are to evolve/grow/learn and God-willing survive, I hope and pray that each of us consciously strive to bridle greed by means of thought/perception, words and actions- practice kindness and  as stated in the Torah, “Treat others as we would want to be treated”.
