Levine, Abe

Abe Levine, 93, of Orange County, Calif., passed away on Monday, Jan. 18.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 22 in California.

Mr. Levine worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, primarily in Kansas City, Mo., for 37 years before retiring and moving to California. He moved to Las Vegas for 14 years, then returned to California.

Mr. Levine was preceded in death by his parents, Hyman and Rose Levine; sisters, Ann Levine Simon and Sara Levine Gorodezky; and brother, Isadore Levine.

He is survived by his brother, Robert Levine, Los Alamitos, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Levine, Chicago, and Hannah Levine, Los Alamitos; and nieces and nephews.

 

Pollock, Sam

Sam Pollock, 100, of Jerusalem, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17.

Funeral and burial took place that day on Har HaZeitim — Mount of Olives — in Jerusalem.

Mr. Pollock was born in Knyshyn, Poland, and came to the United States shortly after World War I. He originally lived in St. Joseph and moved to Kansas City in about 1940, where he resided until he and his wife made aliyah in 1993. He was a member of Kehilath Israel Synagogue in Kansas City and Lev Sameach Synagogue in Jerusalem.

Mr. Pollock is survived by Lillian, his wife of 67 years; , his son and his wife, Rabbi Chaim Irwin and Pamela Pollock; granchildren and their spouses Rabbi Avidan and Sara Pollock, Chana and Rabbi Shlomo Novack, Rabbi Yisroel and Faigy Pollock, Rivka Pollock and Moshe Pollock; and great-grandchildren, Shraga, Aryeh, Mordechai, Rochel, Yehudit, Eliezer, Yehonatan, Tova, Yehoshua, Devorah, Chaya, Pinchos, Yehuda, Avigayil, Simcha, Malka, Chana and Zvi, all of Israel.

Wasserman, Herman

Herman Wasserman, 97, devoted husband, beloved father and dedicated grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Funeral services were held at Monday, Feb. 1, at the Louis Memorial Chapel, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mr. Wasserman was born on March 28, 1912, in St, Joseph, Mo. He was raised there and later married his loving wife of 63 years, Florence. In 1953, they moved with their children to Kansas City.

Herman graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. After initially working in advertising, he joined his father in the insurance business for what became a successful 60-year career, both in St. Joseph and Kansas City. He received numerous awards and recognition in the industry.

Herman was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Ararat Shrine and The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah and its Brotherhood for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Florence, in 2003; son, Michael Wasserman; and brothers, Max and Earl Wasserman.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, William and Pauline Wasserman, Kansas City, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Arthur Liebenthal, Leawood; daughter-in-law, Eileen Wasserman, Los Angeles; grandchildren, Jennifer Liebenthal, Kansas City, Mo., Adam Liebenthal, Boston, Jake and Victoria Wasserman, Boston, and Sara Wasserman, Somerville, Mass.

The family appreciates caregiver Kathy Ganther’s 15 years of loving care and attention. The services provided by Kansas City Hospice are also greatly appreciated.

Herman will be dearly missed by his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Cohen, Sylvia B.

Sylvia B. Cohen, 86, died Friday, Jan. 22, at Seasons Care Center in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Graveside services were held Monday, Jan. 25, in St. Louis. Memorial contributions are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mrs. Cohen was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Cohen.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Mark Cohen and Robert (Chelle) Cohen of Lee’s Summit; grandchildren, Jamie (Joel) Widell and Emily Cohen; great-granddaughter, Katelyn Widell; brother and sister-in-law, Max (Carol) Blinder; sister and brother-in-law, Eve (Herman) Leibovich;  and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Reed, Ida Hankin

Ida Reed, 109, of Overland Park, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, at Village Shalom.

Funeral services were to be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Louis Memorial Chapel, with burial at Sheffield Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the General Fund at Village Shalom, Grace Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Reed was born in Russia in 1900. She immigrated with her family to the United States in 1912. They made their way to the Midwest, where she and her husband owned a grocery store in Kansas City. They moved to Nevada, Mo., from 1931 to 1946, where they owned a clothing store, until their move to Kansas City in 1949.

She was a former member of Congregation Beth Shalom and Pioneer Women.

Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years, Louis Hankin; brothers, Abe Roven and Charles Rubins; sister, Marsha Carr; and son, Richard Hankin.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Irit Hankin, Jerusalem; daughter-in-law, Harriet Hankin, Overland Park; grandchildren and their spouses, Larry and Gail Hankin, Steven and Joelle Hankin, Susan Donaldson, Vered and Jeremy Kaufman, Abigail and Stan Wei, Jonathan and Denise Hankin, Liat Hankin, Adva Hankin, Aviel Hankin and Gilad Hankin; seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Village Shalom and Grace Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.

Seelig, David Hirsch

David Hirsch Seelig, 77, New Orleans, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, after a brief illness.

Mr. Seelig was a native and lifelong resident of New Orleans who graduated from Isidore Newman School, Tulane University and Tulane University Law School. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He was a practicing attorney in New Orleans for more than 30 years, retiring in 1991. He was with the firm of Seelig, Cosse, Frischhertz and Poulliard. He was also a Master Mason in the Sam B. Dreyfus Lodge No. 396, F.&A.M.

He is survived by his wife, Alana Greenberg Block Seelig (formerly of the Kansas City area); his children, Chip Seelig (Sue), Nancy Seelig Silbert (Gary), Thomas S. Block (Jennifer) and James A. Block; grandchildren, Susan M. Silbert, Nicholas L. Silbert, Liza C. Seelig, Mia C. Block and McAlear S. Block; mother-in-law, Dorothy Greenberg, and brother-in-law, Manny Greenberg (both of Kansas City); brother, Philipp A. Seelig; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Block Seelig; and his parents, Marguerite Hall and Lester Seelig.

The family thanks all his doctors and caregivers.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 21, in New Orleans. Memorials to a charity of your choice are preferred.

 

 

Austin, Cindy (Cohn)

Cindy (Cohn) Austin, 46, died at Overland Park Regional Hospital on Dec. 29.

She leaves her husband, Martin; two daughters, Rachael, 16, and Alexandra, 14; parents, Israel and Loretta Cohn of Belton, Mo.; and two brothers, Dr. Jeffrey Cohn of Broussard, La., and Lawrence Cohn, of Costa Mesa, Calif.

She was predeceased by her grandparents, Rose and Morris Hankin and Anna and William Cohn.

Mrs. Austin worked for Demars Pension Company for the last 10 years.

She was admired for her courage and humor, despite having chronic heart disease.

Her life revolved around her family, friends, cooking and cats.

She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

 

Baraban, Dorothy Ruth

Dorothy Ruth Baraban, 89, of Overland Park, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, at Village Shalom.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, with burial at Mount Carmel Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Congregation Beth Shalom Preschool or the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Baraban was born March 26, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., to Philip and Mary (Epstein) Phillips and was a lifelong area resident.

She taught for 12 years at Beth Shalom, nursery to third grade. She also taught at Barstow School and in the Kansas City, Missouri, Public School District. Mrs. Baraban was the advertising manager of The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle for 10 years. She was a fabulous cook and baker and was featured in the Kansas City Star’s “Come into my Kitchen” for her famous brownies.

Mrs. Baraban supported many charities and organizations, including Cancer Research Institute in Israel in honor of her father and mother; she was a Hadassah life member and member of the Sisterhoods of Congregation Beth Shalom in Kansas City and Congregation Beth El in Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam Cinnamon; her husband, William Freiden, of Omaha; her son, Paul Jay Cinnamon, of Overland Park; and her sisters, Libby Bayzman and Ann Phillips, of Kansas City.

Mrs. Baraban is survived by her husband of 10 years, Jack Baraban; sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Judy Cinnamon of Leawood and Dr. Ken Cinnamon and Karen Wengrod of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Mark Miller of Overland Park; grandchildren, Sheri Cardozo, Scott Cinnamon, Justin Cinnamon, Lindsay Pfautsch, Jason Miller, Ian Cinnamon, Molly Cinnamon, Heather Nelson and Rachel Roozrokh; and seven great-grandchildren.

Dorothy will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
