Gene Hurwitz

Gene Hurwitz, 89, Overland Park, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020. Private family services were held Aug. 26.

Gene was born Jan. 6, 1931, to the late Samuel and Fannie Hurwitz in Lawrence, Kansas. Gene was a lifetime area resident, growing up and spending his early married life in Lawrence and eventually in Overland Park. He attended Lawrence High and the University of Kansas.

Gene enlisted in the Air Force and he and his new bride, Sue, were stationed in Germany during the Korean War. While at KU and later Cornell University, Gene studied business and languages, including Russian and Czeck. He used his language skills to translate war chatter intelligence during his time in Germany. After Germany, Sue and Gene returned to Lawrence, where Gene joined his father in their family business, Food Supply, Inc.

Gene liked to stay busy and “retired” many times over. After selling Food Supply, he opened and ran a successful computer learning center, way before computers became a household staple. Later he developed his own theory about the stock market structure and how it could be used in making market decisions… H.E.L.P., Inc. (Hurwitz Exact Location Parameters) was born.

Gene is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sue; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Jeff Shniderman, Jane Hurwitz and Stephen Moore, Ann Hurwitz and Ron Paley; and granddaughters, Olivia, Adina and Zimri.
