L’SHALOM, L’SALAAM, TO PEACE — Sheila Sonnenschein is now involved in Mothers on the Side of Peace, a new grassroots movement for people — you don’t have to be a mother — who side with peace. “It

may seem that there’s nothing we can do, but we have to! We have to shake up the status quo, do something radical — tell world leaders and others that doing business as usual is terrorizing and killing innocent children and others, and we demand another solution,” she has informed family and friends.

The group will gather tonight, Thursday, Aug. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Mill Creek Park. That’s where the fountain is at 47th Street and J.C. Nichols Parkway on the Plaza. They plan to gather in the grassy area. This is one of a number of gatherings taking place in cities including New York City, Chicago and Atlanta.

Sonnenschein said, “We will not point fingers. We want to send a message to the powers that be that we mothers and others will not stand for the continued violence around the world — even the violence happening in the U.S.”

Besides attending the rally, Sonnenschein suggests those who are interested in learning more about the organization “like” the Mothers on the Side of Peace Facebook.

The group’s mission statement says, “We are committed to building societies in which children learn compassion, feel safe and secure, and are raised to use words to resolve conflict.”

“We call on all world leaders to stop the bloodshed and terror — from Israel to Gaza to Syria, Iraq, Nigeria, Sudan, Ukraine, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States.”

“We reject the hate-filled speech and vilifying ‘the other’ on social media, in places of worship and on the streets. We are committed to healthy dialogue and support conversation that recognizes respect for differences of opinion.”

JOHN’S TAILORING ON THE MOVE — We reported in our July 10 edition that John’s Tailoring, owned by Sonia Warshawksi, was being forced to close at Metcalf South Shopping Center by its new owners. At the time, Warshawski stated she had not found another location for the shop and was reluctantly beginning a new chapter in her life. Fast forward just a few weeks and Warshawksi is announcing she has found a new location and will re-open the tailor shop sometime this week. John’s Tailoring can now be found at 5600 W. 95th St., in the Bel Aire Building located on the Northwest corner of 95th and Nall. The shop’s phone number remains the same, 913-642-6225.

ISRAELI TELEVISION — A loyal reader sent me an email the other day reporting that Israel has a new 24-hour Internet news channel broadcasting in English (also French and Arabic) from Tel Aviv. It can be found at http://www.i24news.tv/en/tv/live.

It is a 24-hour news feed (from the Israeli perspective) and is intended to rival CNN, Al-Jazeera, BBC, etc. and it covers world news but also has a specific Israel news section. I didn’t have a chance to check it out to see how long the new feed has been live, but it is live for anyone who wants to check it out personally.

MORE KC SOLDIERS — We heard last week that another former Kansas Citian’s reserve unit in Israel has been called to participate in Operation Protective Edge. The soldier is Erik Claster; however The Chronicle was unable to confirm the information with Claster himself.

Two other former Kansas Citians who served in the IDF, Brian Gersh and Jason Barnett, are working with lone soldiers — soldiers who have no family in Israel. We have been in contact with both of these men and hope to have more on what they have been doing very soon.

HOW DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT? — For far too many Kansas City area homeless veterans, the answer is “not well.” Jewish Family Services is collecting much-needed mattresses and bed frames for homeless veterans living at St. Michael’s Veterans Center in Kansas City, Mo. Mattresses and box springs in clean and good condition and simple metal bed frames; queen-size are preferred, but full and twin beds will also be accepted. To make a donation, call JFS at 913-327-8250 to get on the pickup list. Tax donation receipts will be provided. JFS hopes to collect 12 beds by Aug. 19.
