Joseph Jerome “Joe” Oshiver, 93, Overland Park, died at home surrounded by his family and friends Oct. 3, 2016. Services and burial were held Sunday, Oct. 9, in the Yukon Chapel at Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions be made to Kansas City Hospice.

Joseph was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 18, 1922, to the artist and printer Harry J. and Rebecca Oshiver and sister Esther and brother Sam. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania until 1942 when he joined the Army and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He returned home from the war and in May of 1948 married Theodora “Teddy” Reichman in Kansas City.

He then completed his studies in architecture at the University of Illinois and was employed by Becker and Becker and moved to New York City. In 1963, the family moved to Kansas City to reunite with the Reichman family and participate in the growth of the community. “Joe,” a lover of music and the arts, served Kansas City institutions such as: The Jewish Community Center where he’s been a lifelong member of the board and a member of both the congregation and the board of Congregation Beth Shalom. He served the architectural community by engaging the American Institute of Architects by creating a tour program that integrated history of the buildings and facts about the community that would eventually lead into the renovation of the Power and Light, theater, 18th and Vine districts and of historic sacred structures within Kansas City.

Joe leaves behind his son Michael Aaron Oshiver, granddaughter Cara R. Oshiver, along with his nephews and nieces and many friends.
