Janet Mindlin Scarbrough

Janet Mindlin Scarbrough, 70, of Roswell, Georgia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in the early hours of July 12, 2016. A celebration of life service is planned for Friday, Aug. 5, in Roswell. The family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

She was born to Stanley and Joan Mindlin in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 10, 1946. She attended the University of Kentucky and University of Missouri at Kansas City. Jan later moved to Atlanta, where she was an advertising account executive for the Atlanta Jewish Times for several years. She then held similar positions at now-defunct Peachtree Magazine before accepting a position at Atlanta Magazine. During her tenure there, Jan won numerous sales awards including the magazine’s highest honor, the Chairman’s Club Award, in 2008, 2015 and 2016.

An article published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said colleagues at the magazine described her as someone who connected instantly with everyone she met and forged lasting friendships along the way.

Through Jan’s love and talent for knitting and crocheting, she unfailingly endeared herself to family, friends and even casual acquaintances by creating hand-works of love and caring for every occasion.

Jan was also known for giving her heart to volunteer activities in the Roswell community, including the Roswell Woman’s Club.

Jan was preceded in death by her father, Stanley H. Mindlin (1922-1994).

In addition to her husband of 45 years Stephen Scarbrough, she is survived by her mother, Joan Mindlin, 95, of Overland Park, Kansas; daughter Julie Mallcott (Lee) of Avon, Ohio; sons Mark (Allison), of Atlanta, and Daniel (Christy), of Roswell; brother Harold Mindlin (Barbara Jane) of Austin, Texas; sister Barbara Kovacs (David Leibson) of Overland Park; six grandchildren; and a sizable extended family of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom have maintained a close family bond through the years.
