Barbara Lois Steinhardt, 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park.

Services were held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at The Louis Memorial Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or Congregation Beth Torah.

Barbara was born March 24, 1931, in Boston and had lived in Overland Park and Olathe since 1970.

Even in her decline of recent years, she kept her sharp wit on call whenever possible.

She was the devoted wife and teammate of William Steinhardt for 54 years until his death in 2010. She performed well as the long-suffering navigator on early family road trips. She retained her loyalties to the Red Sox and the Celtics. She was much loved by her small family and her wide circle of friends, including those she competed against regularly around the Mah Jong table and those she welcomed to many Passover seders.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Sadie Shapel; and by her sister, Deborah Hirsh.

She is survived by her three children, of whom she was forever proud, Anne Siegel, Steve Paul (Carol Zastoupil) and Harold Steinhardt (Lori Levens), all of the Kansas City area; grandson, Jeff Nelson of Austin, Texas; niece, Sue Hirsh of Worcester, Mass.; nephew Gary Hirsh of Stamford, Conn.; and her brother-in-law, Dr. Roy Hanu Hart of Alexandria, La.

The family expresses its thanks and gratitude to the many staff members and caregivers who comforted Barbara’s last years at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park and to the nurses and staff of Grace Hospice, who helped send her off with dignity.
