Irene Wurzburger, 94, of Overland Park, passed away on Sunday, Aug 10, 2014.

Services were held at The Louis Memorial Chapel on Monday, Aug. 11, with burial at Sheffield Cemetery. Donations may be made to Congregation Beth Israel Abraham & Voliner; 9900 Antioch; Overland Park, KS 66212.

Irene was born in Ladenburg am/Neckar, Germany, to Sol and Minna Rosenfelder on Nov. 16, 1919. After high school she attended the Jewish Household School in Frankfurt and the following year she attended the Orthopedic Gymnasium Institute in Stuttgart. Irene fled Germany due to Hitler and came to the United States via England on May 20, 1940.

She married Max Wurzburger on May 5, 1942, in Danville, Va. Before moving to the Kansas City area in 1955, they lived in New York. Once in Kansas City, she became an active member of Kehilath Israel (KI) and later Beth Israel Abraham & Voliner (BIAV). Irene and Max were honored by the Israel Bond Drive for their commitment to Israel. She was also the treasurer and an active member of the chevra kadisha, the Kansas City Community Mikvah and the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy Auxiliary. In addition, she was a member of AMIT, Brandeis, Hadassah, and both BIAV and KI Sisterhood.

Her husband, Max, and her son, Allen Joel, preceded Irene in death.

She is survived by her nephew, Daniel Kapustin; her nephews and wives, Samuel and Marsha Kapustin, Robert and Carol Wurzburger; and her niece and husband, Debby and Ezra Hes. She was also blessed with nine great-nieces and nephews and many great-great-nieces and nephews.

Although she did not have grandchildren of her own, she was the adoptive grandmother of many of the children of her community. Irene made her life a blessing and her love of life, integrity, kindness and joyous laugh will always be remembered and cherished by those who knew her.
