Melvyn Beiman, 82, of Lee’s Summit, died on Wednesday, July 24, 2014, at the Village House on the campus of John Knox Village.

Funeral services were Sunday, July 27, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, with burial in Elmont, N.Y. Contributions are suggested to Village House at John Knox Village or the American Cancer Society.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., Mel grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. When he and his wife Frances, also of Brooklyn, married they moved to New Jersey where they lived for 54 years. They moved to Lee’s Summit four years ago to be near family.

Melvyn leaves his wife of 57 years, Frances; daughters, Nancy Beiman and Paula Vanderstel (Gregory); granddaughters, Christy Liebert (Heinz) and Hayley Buss (Joshua); great-grandson, Asher Buss; sister, Ceil Kenigsberg (Allen); brother, Elliott Beiman (Phyllis); two nephews, two nieces and a number of cousins.

Mel was a professional symphonic musician for many years, changing careers at age 47 to work as a computer programmer for AT&T. He continued playing oboe and English horn up until a few months before his death.
