What does Federation do? Where does the money go? And better yet, why do they ask me for more money every year?

Those are questions that I have heard since becoming more involved in the Jewish Federation these past few years. My answers to these questions always go back to my second mission to Israel. When I returned home, I realized it was my responsibility to start stepping up. I wanted to do something that had meaning and purpose. That’s when I started getting involved with the Jewish Federation and finding out how I could help other members of the Jewish community. It was time for me to give back to the community that has given so much to me.

Why give?
In these compelling times, when some of us are turning to Federation, Federations are being called on to do more with less. A growing number of requests for help are coming from formerly middle-class income families who are suddenly in crisis. Your donations mean we can help people in need right here in our own back yard.

But we don’t just put all of our focus on local matters. We are here to help Jews around the world. As recently as last week, the Jewish Federations of North America and Jewish Federation movement have raised more than $2 million for emergency aid to victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Please consider volunteering for this special day, and if you are at home on Sunday, I urge you to pick up the phone when it rings and make a contribution. Whether you volunteer your time, and/or pledge money, you will feel good knowing your time and resources make an important difference in our community. As little as $18 buys a food package for a senior, $40 is one month’s medication for a child, $115 provides counseling services for an out-of-work adult. Did you also realize that you don’t have to pay for this tax-deductible donation until Dec. 31? Not to mention any new or increased gift on Super Sunday will be matched, dollar-for-dollar by a challenge fund. A gift of $100 is just 28 cents a day.

Every donation matters.

The theme this year is Hineini. It means “Here I am.” It was Abraham’s answer to G-d. It’s been an answer the Jews have used throughout history to give of their time, their money, and of themselves. “This Year I AM HERE. This Year HINEINI. This year COUNT ME IN!”
