Helen Schoenberg Schlachter, 95, passed away Friday, Nov. 20, in her apartment at Village Shalom in Overland Park.

Helen was born on July 13, 1914, in Chicago to Lillian and Adolph Schoenberg. After her father’s untimely death, Helen, her mother and her brother, Joe, moved to Clarinda, Iowa, to open Schoenberg’s Ladies Shop. Helen owned Schoenberg’s for 58 years.

Helen married the love of her life, Maury Schlachter, of New York City. They were married for 46 years. She and Maury had one son, David, who preceded her in death in 1970. Helen and Maury lived in St Joseph, Mo., and Clarinda.

Helen moved to Overland Park in 2005 to be with extended family. She made many new friends and received excellent care from the staff at Village Shalom.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Joe; son, David; and husband, Maury. She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Helen will be remembered as a kind and generous woman. She was a loyal friend and loved by many.
