Sidney Epstein was born on Jan. 16, 1914, in New York City to Samuel and Tillie (Hirsch) Epstein. He died Sunday, Nov. 8, in Sioux Falls, S.D. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 10, with burial at Sons of Israel Cemetery in Sioux Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s favorite charity. Sidney graduated from West Orange, N.J., High School in 1931. Following high school, he joined the Air Corps and Infantry during World War II and was ranked as a staff sergeant. Sidney and Judee Kaplow were united in marriage on Jan. 23, 1944, in West Orange. They have been residents of Sioux Falls, S.D., for more than 65 years. Sidney opened Sid’s Crown Liquor in December 1947, owning it for close to 62 years. Sid’s is the oldest liquor store in South Dakota. Sidney traveled extensively through Europe and Israel. He was a member of numerous clubs and associations, such as Mount Zion Temple, Lions Club, American Legion, Forty and Eight, Masonic Lodge, Legion of Honor, El Riad Shrine, Scottish Rite, High 12, Elks Club, Sioux Falls Symphony, SD Retailers Association, Y.M.C.A., Westward Ho Country Club, AARP, B’nai B’rith, Center for Active Generations, honorary member American Italian Club and the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce. Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Henry (Clarice) Epstein, Overland Park; daughters, Robi (Paul) Damyan and Barbara Epstein, both of St. Louis; grandchildren, Dr. Teri (Jason) Bretz, Michael (Rebecca) Epstein, and Trevor, Martin and Sara Damyan; great-grandchildren, Halle and Evan Bretz and Livia Epstein. His wife, Judee, a sister, Rose Friedman, and brother, Irving, preceded him in death. An online guestbook is available at www.millerfh.com.
