Grossman, Gale Irving

Gale I. Grossman, 84, of Leawood, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Menorah Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 6, at Congregation Beth Shalom. Burial at Mount Carmel Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Gale and Maxine Grossman Religious School Endowment Fund at Congregation Beth Shalom or to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Mr. Grossman owned Gale Grossman Jewelry on the Country Club Plaza, which he opened shortly after he returned from World War II. After 40 years on the Plaza he continued in the industry at a private office in Overland Park. He loved what he did and, in addition to being a certified gemologist, was a wonderful jewelry designer.

He was a third generation member of Congregation Beth Shalom, a member of B’nai B’rith, the Jewish Community Center, the Retail Jeweler’s Association and his high school Ambassadors Fraternity, the remaining members of which are still close today. He also attended the University of Missouri where he was a member of Phi Sigma Sigma.

Gale was born in Kansas City, Mo., was a lifelong area resident and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was a daily presence at The Athletic Club of Overland Park,  where he had many friends of all ages.

Mr. Grossman was preceded in death by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sandy and Bernie Newberg.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maxine Grossman, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Harvey and Alice Grossman; Bob and Bette Grossman; daughter and son-in-law: Lynne and David Bock, all of Leawood; sister and brother-in-law, Charlene and Norman Meltzer, Overland Park; brother-in-law, Marty Bass, Lenexa; grandchildren, Andrew, Jon and Sarah Grossman, Brian, Abbey and Carrie Grossman, and Hannah, Charlie and Janie Bock.

To Gale, family was always first. He loved life and never missed a chance to help people.

Gale was a man who was enjoyed and will be greatly missed.
