Edward James Sachs, 51, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away July 3, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Ed was born Jan. 18, 1958, in Midland, Mich. He attended Shawnee Mission East High School and the University of Kansas before leaving to pursue a career in retail sales. This career led him to California, where he managed the largest Footlocker store in the country. His great passion for the outdoors eventually led him to Oregon and then Seattle, where he owned a home remodeling company. Ed spent as much free time as possible on a fishing boat or on his property taking care of his goats Ben and Jerry, or going to outdoor classic music festivals in his vintage VW Bus. Ed’s love for the tattoo started in Seattle and continued when he returned to Kansas City in 2007 to be closer to his mother, who had pancreatic cancer, and to his family while he battled bladder cancer. His move to Kansas City allowed him to see in person his favorite sports teams, the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas City Chiefs, and to discover his new favorite sport, Roller Derby. Ed was a business owner and a vibrant part of the Midtown community until his untimely death on Friday. To his customers he was the friend they could talk to and the owner who knew all of their names, their worries, their favorite drink, and cared about them as family because, to Ed, all of his friends and customers were family. Ed was a great son, brother, uncle and a best friend to everyone who knew him. Preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and JoAnne Sachs, Ed is survived by his sister, Jenny Sands and husband, Neal; his brother, Steve Sachs and wife, Lori; his nieces, Polly and Katie; his nephew, Andy; and countless friends whose lives were greatly enhanced by having the opportunity to have their souls touched by Ed’s kindness and friendship. He will be greatly missed. There will be a celebration of Ed’s life from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at 3895 State Line, Kansas City, Mo. The family requests donations to the American Cancer Society. Arr: Cremation Society of Kansas & Missouri, 8837 Roe, Prairie Village, KS 66207.
