Works by Ellie Kort, whose day job is graphic designer at Hallmark Cards, lined the south wall of the gallery. Paintings by Ellie’s twin, Rachel Kort, a graphic designer for Midwest Research Institute, were displayed on the south wall. Both of the 32-year-old Jewish women attended the University of Kansas earning, bachelor of fine arts degrees. But it was Rachel who was drawn first to painting, which was the emphasis of her BFA.
Ellie Kort said her work is similar to her sister’s paintings, yet different. “Mine have a little more of a grittier, street feel to them,” Ellie Kort said, mentioning some of her graffiti-artist inspirations and use of spray paint. “Hers are brighter, more vibrant; although the mark making is similar.” Each sister made eight 4-by-5-foot paintings for the show, which continues through June 29. Gallery hours are by appointment only. Call (816) 994-8995 for an appointment.

D.J. Mike Dileo had the music pumping as the First Friday crowd wandered in and out of the Kort sisters’ “In Stereo” exhibit at the B Gallery, 2016 Main St.
“I had never painted in my life,” Ellie Kort said. “I took some drawing classes, but then I saw my sister have some success and sell paintings and get good feedback. Since we are identical twins, I thought ‘Maybe I have some of the same kind of talent.’ So I tried it. She taught me a lot.”
