The Kansas City Star’s international news coverage is a shell of its former self. You need to follow a variety of news outlets these days to maintain a sense of perspective. Who, for instance, has pointed out that far more Middle Eastern Muslims have been made refugees this month by the Pakistani Taliban — well over 1 million — than the Jewish state ever thought of dispersing during its 1948 War of Independence? If you only read the Egyptian Ambassador’s op-ed column this week in The Star, you might accept his implication that Cairo’s Al-Azhar University is a font of Islamic moderation, and not the fief of Imam Muhammad Tantawi, an overt anti-Semite who has justified suicide bombings. To know that, you’d have to read The Chronicle, Bill Tammeus’ blog, or the invaluable memri.org. Likewise, if you tune in to MSNBC, you might think that Pat Buchanan is a reasonable man whose opinions are worthy of respect, and not a Nazi-defending, Israel-damning Christian supremacist. These are turbulent times in journalism. We are proud to provide an anchor, rooted in Jewish history and values.
